Auto Sales in May Drop 3.7%; GM, Ford, Chrysler Lead

New York – Auto sales in May were weaker than expected as prices rose and Japanese makers held back discounts to preserve inventories. Smaller car sales helped Ford and GM. GM, Ford and Chrysler led the auto sales in the month on supply chain problems for the Japanese makers.



U.S. auto sales in May declined 3.7% from a year ago as customers held back on new purchases and Japanese automakers dial back incentives.



GM, Ford and Chrysler, three domestic makers led the sales in the month as Toyota, Honda and Nissan struggle with parts supplies after March 11 earthquake in Japan.



For the year so far, total light vehicle sales increased 14% to 5.28 million from 4.63 million, passenger car sales rose 14.4% to 2.7 million from 2.36 million and light truck sales increased 13.7% to 2.58 million from 2.27 million.



The monthly data are released by the industry research organization Autodata Corp based in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.



Seasonally adjusted annual sales rate in May decreased 11.80 million from 13.17 million in April and from 11.64 million in the month a year ago.



In May, total light vehicle sales declined 3.7% to 1,061,719 from 1,102,899 from a year ago period. Passenger car sales in the month fell to 546,687 from 562,330 and light truck sales decreased to 515,032 from 540,569.



For the year sales for Subaru rose 7.6%, Hyundai Motor sales increased of 28.8% and Kia sales increased 44.8%.



Hyundai sales in the month rose 20.7%, Kia sales increased 53.4% and Subaru sales decreased 15.3%.



Three U.S. automakers, GM, Ford and Chrysler ranked first, second and third for the first time since September 2006 as Toyota and Honda suffered sales decline.



Sales at GM, Ford, Chrysler Rise







General Motors (GM) sales decreased 1.0% to 221,192 from 223,410. Sales of light vehicles fell 9.7% to 123,165 from 136,374. Sales of cars increased 12.6% to 98,027. Sales for the year so far increased 18.6% to 1,046,275 from 882,277.



Ford Motor Company (F) sales decreased 0.3% to 191,529 from 192,012 vehicles a year ago. For the year so far, sales rose 12% to 876,321 from 782,451 compared to a year ago period. Truck sales in the month fell 5.4% to 116,198 from 122,804.



Sales of passenger cars gained 8.8% to 75,331 compared to 69,208 a year ago. In May, sales of the Fusion increased 10.2% to total of 24,666. For the year-to-date Fusion sales increased 19.5% totaled 110,878 from 92,763.



Chrysler LLC sales in May increased 10.1% to 115,363 from 104,819 vehicles a year ago. Sales of cars decreased 4.0% to 32,258 and light truck sales rose 16.7% to 83,105. For the year so far, sales increased 19.5% to 519,538 from 434,737.



Toyota Sales plunges 33%



Toyota Motor sales in May declined 33.4% to 108,387 from 162,813 in the same period a year earlier. Sales of the cars decreased 39.0% to 56,919 from 93,310 and light trucks decreased 25.9% to 51,468 from 69,503 a year ago.



Honda sales in the month decreased 22.5% to 90,773 from 117,173 a year ago. For the year so far, sales rose 7.4% to 520,000 from 490,000. Sales of cars in the month fell 29.5% to 48,278 from 68,481 and sales of the light trucks decreased 12.7% to 42,495 compared to 48,692 a year ago.



Nissan Motor Company vehicles sales in the month decreased 9.1% to 76,148 from 83,764 a year ago. For the year so far, sales rose 15.2% to 0.43 million from 0.37 million. May cars sales fell 7.2% and sales of the light trucks decreased 13.1% from a year ago.



Mitsubishi Motors vehicles May sales surged 59.8% to 7,568 compared with 4,737 units in the month of last year.



Sales for Mazda decreased 20.9% to 17,875 compared to 22,605 in the year ago and Isuzu Motors failed to sell a single vehicle compared to none in the month a year ago.



BMW Sales Up 40%, VW Sales Rise 24%



Volkswagen Group of America Inc sales increased 24% to 40,805 from 32,899 a year ago. Vehicles branded Audi sales increased 13.6%. Volkswagen gained 27.9% and Bentley sales soared to 68.7%.



Mercedes-Benz USA unit sales in the month rose 4.6% to 20,800 from a year ago. Sales of Maybach declined 75.0% to only 2 compared to 8 a year ago. Sales of the Smart decreased 29.2% to 492 from 695 a year ago.



BMW of North America Inc sales in the month increased 19.8% to 26,477 compared to a year ago month to 22,110. Rolls Royce sales soared 38.9% to 25 from 18 a year ago.



Jaguar Land Rover N.A. LLC unit sales increased 13.4% to 4,162 from 3,671 a year ago. Sales of Land Rover increased 6.7% to 2,891 from 2,709.



Porsche Cars N.A. Inc sales in the month soared 50.4% to 2,817 from 1,873 a year ago.



For the year so far, sales rose 47% to 12,996 from 8,843. Sales of cars in the month fell 7.0% to 1,559 from 1,676 and sales of the light trucks surged five-fold to 1,258 compared to 197 a year ago.
