Lampard, 32, got down on one knee after a romantic beach side lunch in Los Angeles where the couple have spent the last few days.
It took three months of secret planning and cost as much as £150,000 but Christine Bleakley has insisted fiancé Frank Lampard’s proposal was 'not very fancy'.
The couple are holidaying in America on a trip estimated to be costing £30,000 taking in Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The Chelsea footballer is understood to have lavished in excess of £120,000 on the ring and arranged for one of his friends that worked in America to fly out ahead with it - to make sure that the proposal remained a surprise.
Miss Bleakley, also 32, confessed she 'cried for ten minutes' after he proposed.
The couple have been on a two week break staying first at the Wynn Encore five star luxury resort in Nevada for almost a week, which costs £400 a night, and boasts its own golf course, private cabanas, four pools and a spa.
They travelled to California last weekend and it is understood they have been staying at the the £350-a-night SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, which is a favourite with Hollywood biggest names.
Club class flights cost in excess of £8,000 return each at this time of year.
The Daybreak presenter ducked out of celebrations to call colleagues on Adrian Chiles and Kate Garraway live on the show yesterday.
She said: ‘I was beyond shocked. And it wasn’t very glamorous, it wasn’t very fancy - I know maybe some people might expect that. It was very personal, very private actually, and we were just having a gorgeous lunch by the beach and he simply popped the question, it was completely out of the blue.’
The star added that she realised what was happening because he began a 'lovey-dovey build up'.
She added: ‘Half-way through the lovey-dovey bit, I realised what he was about to do so I started to cry. I started to cry for about ten minutes and then he pulled the ring out and said "Will you marry me?" and that was it.’
The couple have only been seen a handful of times since the proposal, which is believed to have taken place on Monday.
They dined at the Chateau Marmont to celebrate their engagement, which has been the most popular restaurant with Hollywood stars in Los Angeles for decades.
Lampard and Miss Bleakley have also enjoyed romantic dinners at the upmarket BOA restaurant, and exclusive Italian eaterie Cecconi’s, before being photographed looking besotted with each other while out shopping at the Century City Mall on Wednesday.
She said: ‘I swear I’m so giggly and it sounds so ridiculous because it’s obviously just the two of us over here at the minute and we kind of feel l like we’re on cloud nine, off in our own little bubble.
'It’s all a bit odd and we can’t wait to get home to be honest and see everybody, but it just feels a bit surreal to be honest.'
The footballer, who is earns £10 million a year from his footballing and endorsement contracts, asked Miss Bleakley’s parents’ permission for her hand in marriage before popping the question.
Suspecting she may find the ring – he even went to the trouble of arranging for a friend who worked in America to fly out with the ring ahead of their arrival.
Miss Bleakley explained: ‘He had done the very right thing. He spoke to my mum and dad beforehand.
'So they were very happy and yes, my family are over the moon. We all are, we’re all a bit shocked and surprised but really quite ecstatic.'
'He had it all organised and funny enough, because I’m such a nosey cow, he thought if he brought the ring over that I would find it in the suitcase. So his best friend, or one of his best mates who works out here, he flew out with the ring in advance.
‘It’s not about my career, it’s not about your job or anything else, it’s about that.’
She recently said that Lampard was keen to have more children.
Frank and Christine met at the Pride of Britain Awards in 2009 after being introduced by Piers Morgan and England cricketer Kevin Pietersen.
The footballer has two children with his ex-fiancée Elen Rivas, Luna, five and Isla, four.
Frank split from the Spanish model in November 2008 after seven years together.
This is the second engagement for Bleakley - she was previously engaged to Dublin restaurant owner Christian Stokes in 2004.
